Microsoft Excel History From 1982 As Multiplan

Microsoft Excel is a well-know and well-used world wide spreadsheet and data processing application. Excel user mostly but not limited to in Financial sector and Small and Medium Enterprises.

The first version of Excel was released for the Macintosh in 1985 and its Windows version following (numbered version 2.0) in November 1987. Lotus turns down to the market late spreadsheet program for Windows, and in that year, Lotus 1-2-3 was based MS- DOS. In 1988, Excel began to shift in market share 1-2-3 spreadsheet program and makes Microsoft as a developer of software applications for personal computers reliably. This achievement confirmed that Microsoft as a very strong competitor for the 1-2-3 and they even develop it further. Microsoft, using its superiority, the average release a new Excel version once every two years, and the latest versions of Excel for Windows is Microsoft Office Excel 2013, while for the Macintosh (Mac OS X), is the latest version of Excel for Mac.

In 1982, Microsoft made a spreadsheet program called Multiplan, a very popular operating system CP / M, but not in MS-DOS system considering there already standing rival, namely Lotus 1-2-3. This makes Microsoft started developing a new spreadsheet program called Excel, with the aim, in the words of Doug Klunder, 'do everything 1-2-3 does and do it better "do what was done by 1-2-3 and better yet ".

Since 1993, Excel already has a programming language Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which can add the ability of Excel to automate in Excel and also add functions that can be defined by the UDF (User Defined Functions) for use in the worksheet , In the next version, Microsoft even added an IDE (integrated development environment) for language VBA (Visual Basic Application) for Excel, making it easier for programmers to manufacture homemade program. In addition, Excel also can record everything done by the user to be macros, so that it can perform several tasks automation. VBA also allow the creation of forms and controls contained in the worksheet to be able to communicate with users. VBA language also supports the use of ActiveX DLL / COM, although not able to make it. The next VBA versions add support for class modules allowing the use of object-oriented programming techniques in VBA.

When first bundled into Microsoft Office in 1993, Microsoft redesigned the display interface used by Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint to match the look of Microsoft Excel, which at that time was the most preferred spreadsheet application.

Automation functions provided by VBA made Excel as a target of macro viruses. This is a very serious problem in the corporate world until antivirus products began to add support to detect and clean macro viruses from the Excel file. Finally, belatedly, Microsoft is also integrating the function to prevent abuse of macros by disabling macros as a whole, or activating macros when activating a workbook, or trust macros are encrypted using a trusted digital certificate.
